Second Corinthians is one of the four letters of Paul known as the Hauptbriefe , which are universally accepted to contain authentic Pauline correspondence. Werner Georg Kummel would like to view the letter to be a whole composed by the apostle Paul on one occasion Introduction to the New Testament , pp. However, there are difficulties that have suggested to several commentators that 2 Corinthians has been compiled from several pieces of correspondence. Since the “sorrowful letter” mentioned in does not describe 1 Corinthians, we know that Paul had written at least three letters to the Corinthians. A quite reasonable suggestion is that the last four chapters contain the “sorrowful letter” that is mentioned in Other evidence bears out this view. Edgar J.

The Church at Corinth had great potential, but its history was marked by dissension, confusion in theology, distortions in worship, and apathy in moral concerns. Therefore, it is a letter of extreme relevance for churches in our day and age. This is a unique letter with a writing style that is very personal, bold, at times sarcastic, and very defensive. It shares the concern, passion, intimate feelings and thoughts of an apostle who is defending his own apostleship and ministry in a church which he founded.
Even a casual reading gives the impression of a man who is on his feet fighting a battle with his feelings and personal biases clearly involved. It reads almost like a man who expresses freely his feelings about himself and his ministry in a journal.

Remember Me. Even Christians that read their Bibles regularly probably could not tell you when any of the Epistles of Paul were written with any more accuracy than “some time in the middle of the 1 st Century. That ignorance did not prevent me from understanding and being blessed by what I read! Why then should I now worry at all about the precise dates the Epistles were written?
I have come to realize that to thoroughly understand any of the Bible, you have to be able to understand the precise historical background in the mind of the writer and the recipients. If this reason is true for the rest of the Bible, it is particulary true for 2 Corinthians, an epistle of Paul , that I will show, has been incorrectly dated for at least years, by every commentator I could find!
Few pieces of correspondence by Paul have attracted so much controversial comment as has 2 Corinthians. Why does Paul seem oblivious to important.
When the New Testament was written is a significant issue, as one assembles the overall argument for Christianity. Confidence in the historical accuracy of these documents depends partly on whether they were written by eyewitnesses and contemporaries to the events described, as the Bible claims. Negative critical scholars strengthen their own views as they separate the actual events from the writings by as much time as possible.
For this reason radical scholars argue for late first century, and if possible second century, dates for the autographs [original manuscripts]. By these dates they argue that the New Testament documents, especially the Gospels, contain mythology. The writers created the events contained, rather than reported them. The Gospel of Luke was written by the same author as the Acts of the Apostles, who refers to Luke as the ‘former account’ of ‘all that Jesus began to do and teach’ Acts The destiny ‘Theophilus’ , style, and vocabulary of the two books betray a common author.

The epistle is attributed to Paul the Apostle and a co-author named Timothy , and is addressed to the church in Corinth and Christians in the surrounding province of Achaea , in modern-day Greece. While there is little doubt among scholars that Paul is the author, there is discussion over whether the Epistle was originally one letter or composed from two or more of Paul’s letters. Although the New Testament contains only two letters to the Corinthian church, the evidence from the letters themselves is that he wrote at least four and the church replied at least once:.
The abrupt change of tone from being previously harmonious to bitterly reproachful in 2 Corinthians 10—13 has led many to speculate that chapters 10—13 form part of the “letter of tears” which were in some way tagged on to Paul’s main letter. The seemingly sudden change of subject from chapter 7 to chapters 8—9 leads some scholars to conclude that chapters 8—9 were originally a separate letter, and some even consider the two chapters to have originally been distinct themselves.
Other scholars dispute this claim, however.
